Choose the Right Air Route – Optimize Cost and Transit Time

In air freight, choosing the right flight route not only impacts delivery time but also determines transportation costs, cargo safety, and your company’s credibility. “Faster” doesn’t always mean better—and “cheaper” doesn’t always mean more efficient. Each air route comes with its own advantages and limitations, and should be carefully evaluated before making a decision.

Why Is Choosing the Right Air Route Important?

Selecting an air route isn’t just about booking a flight—it’s about optimizing multiple factors simultaneously, including:

  • Nature of the cargo: Perishable goods, high-value items, or general freight?
  • Required delivery time: Is it an urgent 24–48h shipment or a more flexible timeline?
  • Logistics budget: What cost constraints has your business set?
  • Destination market & airport infrastructure: Are there direct flights available? Does the route require transshipment?

Failing to weigh these considerations carefully can lead to serious risks such as delayed deliveries, unexpected costs, or damage and loss of goods—ultimately affecting customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.

Types of Air Freight Routes in Logistics

Advantages and Disadvantages of Different Air Cargo Routes.

1. Direct Flight Route

A direct flight transports cargo from the point of origin to the destination without any stopovers or transshipments at intermediate airports.

Advantages:

  • Fastest transit time
  • Minimizes risks of delays, loss, or misrouting
  • Ideal for urgent shipments, medical supplies, or dangerous goods requiring strict handling

Disadvantages:

  • Higher freight rates compared to transit routes
  • Not all destinations have direct flights
  • Difficult to consolidate cargo with small volumes

SHA Recommendation: Use for high-value, time-critical shipments, or those under strict delivery commitments.

2. One-Stop Transit Flight

Cargo is transferred at one intermediate airport before reaching the final destination. This is the most common method in international air freight.

Advantages:

  • More competitive rates than direct flights
  • Flexible in terms of airlines, schedules, and cargo consolidation
  • Access to major transit hubs like Singapore, Doha, and Incheon

Disadvantages:

  • Risk of delay due to bad weather or congestion at the transit airport
  • Higher chance of misplacement if packaging and sealing are not done properly

SHA Recommendation: Ideal for general cargo that isn’t too urgent but still requires reliable timing and cost optimization.

3. Multi-Stop Transit Flight

Cargo is routed through two or more transit airports, commonly used for rare routes or small consolidated shipments.

Advantages:

  • Lowest freight rates among the three options
  • Suitable for non-urgent cargo or small-volume shipments

Disadvantages:

  • Longer transit time
  • Higher risk of delays and customs clearance issues
  • Not suitable for perishable or temperature-sensitive goods

SHA Recommendation: Best when budget is the main concern and longer transit time is acceptable.

The cargo is carefully prepared for loading onto the aircraft.
